Waitangi Day welcome for locals from Te Puia

Leading cultural tourism attraction, Te Puia is encouraging locals and visitors from around New Zealand to share in the spirit of Manaakitanga this Waitangi Day by throwing open its gates to locals for free and a heavily discounted offer of $10 for kiwis.

Te Puia chief executive officer, Te Taru White says “the offer demonstrates the importance we place not only on this special day but also in encouraging New Zealanders to celebrate Māori culture, if only for a day.” Te Taru adds that this offer is just a token of how Te Puia works throughout the country and the world in promoting and fostering traditional arts and culture. With an impressive new carving and weaving school amidst the multi million dollar redevelopment, Te Puia encapsulates the spirit of its ancestors along with leading edge tourism technologies of today.

Sales and Marketing Manager, Kelly Stewart says “Te Puia will be a place of celebration this Waitangi Day where on Friday the 6th of February, visitors can enjoy a vast array of additional activities and unique experiences such as authentic Māori kai cooked in the geothermal waters of Ngaratuatara, seafood delicacies and a kiwi barbeque with an indigenous flavour.” Visitors can also participate in a range of interactive activities that range from trying their hand at traditional arts and crafts in the Pikirangi village or learning about Te Puia through touch screen technology in Te Whare Tapare. Waitangi Day visitors can also enjoy a special $15.00 hangi feast which will run from 11am-3pm, additional outdoor concerts featuring some of the country’s leading Kapahaka performers and expert weaving and carving demonstrations.
